University of Peace:
The
University for Peace (UPEACE) is an institution of higher education dedicated
to the study of peace. Created by UN General Assembly Resolution 35/55, the
University for Peace has been training leaders for peace for the past four
decades. It is a unique global academic institution with over 2,000 Alumni
hailing from more than 120 nations. Through its Master’s and Doctoral degree
programmes, UPEACE trains future leaders to explore and formulate strategies
and practices in various contexts to address the causes of multiple problems
affecting human and global wellbeing, and thus contribute to the
processes of peacekeeping and peace building.
General
Description of Job:
|
Essential
Qualifications Required:
1)
Ph.D. (or near to completion at the time of application) in the fields of law,
economics or another social science.
2)
At least three years of teaching experience in the area of Countering and
Prevention of Illicit Trade, Transnational Organized Crime and related topics,
or three years’ relevant work experience facilitating workshops/activities
related to peace and social justice.
3)
Academic expertise and capacity to teach in the fields of Countering and
Prevention of Illicit Trade and Transnational Organized Crime and International
Peace Studies, with expertise in at the following areas: conflict prevention,
resolution and transformation, and the role of the United Nations and civil
society movements. Applicants familiar with gender mainstreaming will be
prioritized.
4)
Total fluency in English and Spanish. Fluency in Portuguese is a desirable
asset.
Knowledge:
1)
Must be familiar with the interdisciplinary area of Countering and Prevention
of Illicit Trade and Transnational Organized Crime and International Peace
Studies.
2)
Must be able to teach general and specialized courses in at least two of the
following topics: conflict prevention, transnational organized crime and the
inter-relations with illegal migration, human trafficking, drug trafficking and
the role of the United Nations.
3)
A theoretical and working knowledge of Peace and Conflict studies will be
considered an asset.

General
Responsibilities of Job:
The
Candidate will work together with other staff in the University to lead,
develop and coordinate a Cathedra (Chair) on Countering and Prevention of
Illicit Trade and Transnational Organized Crime, with structured educational
courses and a research line in the field of countering and preventing illicit
trade and transnational organized crime.
Specific
Responsibilities of Job:
Under
a full-time position as Head of the Chair, the Candidate will be expected to:
1)
Develop, coordinate and teach a minimum 9 credits of courses on Countering and
Prevention of Illicit Trade and Transnational Organized Crime, in both English
and Spanish, from the following perspectives: 1.1 Peace and Conflict Studies;
1.2. International Law; 1.3. Sustainable Development; 1.4. Money Laundering;
1.5. National Security; and 1.6. Corruption.
2)
Develop and coordinate a series of publications related to the focus of the
courses in the field of Countering and Prevention of Illicit Trade and
Transnational Organized Crime, within the UPEACE mandate.
3)
Collaborate with the UPEACE faculty, as required, on the development and
delivery of the broader academic programme at UPEACE.
4)
Support other departmental activities.
5)
Develop and coordinate the research lines in matters related to the Countering
and Prevention of Illicit Trade and Transnational Organized Crime Chair.
6)
Support and coordinate other activities for the Chair, focusing matters related
to Countering and Prevention of Illicit Trade and Transnational Organized
Crime, and on general events and
workshops
organized by the University. Support the Dean and Heads of Department as
required in programme development and other academic departmental activities.
7)
Develop, coordinate and teach a minimum 9 credits of courses on Countering and
Prevention of Illicit Trade and Transnational Organized Crime, in both English

13)
Teach courses under the guidance of the Academic Coordinator.
14)
Advise students on their academic courses and other affairs.
15)
Supervise students on thesis, internships or field projects, major papers and
major projects, in collaboration with other faculty members or international
scholars.
16)
Conduct research consistent with UPEACE’s mission and mandate.
17)
Contribute to the design and implementation of outreach activities in the
surrounding communities, in the field of peace studies.
18)
Contribute to the UPEACE community through the development and implementation
of creative and engaging academic activities and events.
19)
To help attain partners, resources and networks for the Cathedra on Countering
and Prevention of Illicit Trade and Transnational Organized Crime.
