Hathras case related to the alleged gang rape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit woman was transferred to CBI after a recommendation made by Uttar Pradesh Government. The Central Government issued a notification for the investigation in the case by the central agency.

A petition is pending in the Hon'ble Supreme Court demanding a Court-monitored CBI probe. The government told the court that it has no objection to the CBI probe and also requested that CBI be also asked to investigate the "criminal conspiracy" behind the alleged propaganda against the State using the case. The UP government has registered FIR for sedition, criminal conspiracy, etc. alleging that there was an attempt to promote enmity between cast groups and provoke riots by investigating fake news about this case. One Kerala based journalist and three others have been arrested by the UP Police while they were going to Hathras to report.

The UP Police has refused the possibility of rape in the case by presenting a forensic report which showed the absence of sperm sample in the victim’s body.

The woman belonging to the Valmiki community was allegedly gang-raped and angulated by four upper-caste men on September 14. She was initially treated at Jawaharlal Nehru College hospital, Aligarh. When her health started deteriorating, she was taken to Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi where she breathes her last on September 29. The police allegedly cremated her body in the middle of the night, ignoring the protest of her family members. The UP police told the Hon’ble Supreme Court that the Midnight cremation was done to award law and order situation because various groups of protest were mobilizing in the village to provoke riots.
