Supreme Court on Wednesday accused the central government Of “cherry picking” names for appointments to tribunals groaning under backlogs and left almost defunct by long pending vacancies
The Chief Justice of India said “If the government does not act, we will pass orders”.
The Chief Justice of India termed the state of tribunals and the thousands of litigants waiting for justice ‘pitiable'. Cases were adjourned for months. There was no manpower to form Benches. Litigants were made to travel too far away States where there were at least some tribunal numbers available to hear cases.
City Government moves Supreme Court on powers of L-G
The Delhi government has moved the Supreme Court seeking the ‘quashing of four amended sections of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act’ and ‘13 rules of the Transaction of Business of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Rules 1993
National Crime Records Bureau reported that 28% jump in filing of cases in 2020
NCRB reported that there was a 28% increase in the registration of cases in 2020 in the country compared to 2019.
The cases of sedition declined from 93 in 2019 to 73 last year.

Give Status of NIA cases before special courts: HC
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed its registry officials to file a response detailing the status of NIA cases pending before special courts here, along with the reasons behind delay in any trial.
Ban on firecrackers in New Delhi
The storage, sale and use of all types of firecrackers is banned with immediate effect in the capital as declared by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
C.M. said it was essential for the city to implement the ban in order to save lives.
Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that NGT had directed a complete ban on firecrackers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
New excise policy to help get more revenue
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that the Delhi government is likely to earn an additional revenue of 3,500 crore rupees from the excise department during the current financial year as the government has revised the excise policy and plugged leaks in the revenue flow.
Following are the characteristics of the new licence:
- The legal age for liquor consumption was reduced to 21 years from 25.
- The licence fee has now increased to 6.5 crore to 7 crore per shop.
The government said that they have estimated they will receive 200% more revenue. Now, the government will receive 3,500 crore extra revenue in the next 12 months. This is revolutionary.
Supreme Court poser on replacement of acting NCLAT Chief
Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana requested Attorney General K.K. Venugopal to get instructions from the government and be present when the Court takes up a petition on September 16 regarding the exit of Justice A.I.S. Cheena as acting chairperson of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT).
India, China avoided open clash over origins of COVID-19
India and China avoided an open clash at the BRICS summit last week over views on the origins of COVID-19 virus, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong intervention in favour of a “transparent investigation” into the origins of the pandemic, a subject China has been sensitive about.
According to officials and diplomats present at the BRICS, Hon'ble P.M. Modi spoke “emphatically” and ‘forcefully’ on the subject reiterating India’s previous in statements calling for China to cooperate with the WHO team which visited the Wuhan Institute of Virology twice, but had complained formally about the lack of free access to formal facilities and data, leading to an inconclusive report with “four pathways” to the origin of the virus that has left nearly 4.7 million people dead worldwide.
