Supreme Court forms new committee to assess damage caused by Baghjan oil well fire.

  • New committee to be led by Justice B.P Katakey former Gauhati High Court judge.
  • It will assess the damage and reparation of Dibru-Saikhowa- National park and surrounding fragile areas.
  • Justice D.Y Chandrachud led bench informed that the committee’s work was of adjudicatory nature.

Absence of Deputy Speaker for Lok Sabha.

  • Delhi High Court has asked centre to explain the vacancy for the post of Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha.
  • Vacancy is violation of Article 93 of Indian Constitution.
  • Post has been vacant for 830 days.
  • It is upon the House to elect the Deputy Speaker from amongst its members.
  • Combined opposition does not have the mandate to elect a member of their choice.
WhatsApp fined for breaching Data Protection Rules.

  • The Data Protection Commission of Ireland fined WhatsApp $267 million.
  • It had violated European Union data protection rules about sharing WhatsApp data with other Facebook companies.
  • It also asked WhatsApp to induce change in its way of communication and adhere to EU guidelines.
  • EU Rules are known as General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR.
Legislation banning Abortion upheld by US Supreme Court.

  • Texas legislation prohibits abortion once the fetal heartbeat is detected i.e generally after 6 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Decision is considered as major milestone in fight over abortion.
  • The decision was decided by a 5-4 vote.
  • Conservative, Chief Justice John Roberts was in dissent.
  • Court also said that the decision was not a conclusion on the constitutionality of Texas law and legal challenges are allowed.
  • In Roe v. Wade SC had legalized abortion nationwide in 1973.
