Amid protests, Centre hikes MSP for Rabi crops

  • The government on Wednesday increased the minimum support price (MSP) for wheat for the upcoming Rabi season to ₹2,015 per quintal, a 2% hike from the ₹1,975 per quintal rate of last year.

  • The MSP is the rate at which the government purchases crops from farmers.

SC rejects door-to-door vaccination plea
  • The Supreme Court shot down a petition to direct the government to immediately embark on a door-to-door COVID19 vaccination policy.

  • It also said such pleas were a product of ignorance about the diversity of the country and complexity of governance.

Jharkhand House clears Bill for 75% quota for locals
  • The Jharkhand Assembly on Wednesday passed a Bill, which provides 75% reservation for locals in private sector jobs with a monthly salary of up to ₹40,000.

  • Once notified, Jharkhand will become the third State, after Andhra Pradesh and Haryana, to pass such a law.

HC transfers probe into custodial death to CBI
  • The Delhi High Court transferred the probe into the death of gangster Ankit Gujjar, inside the Tihar jail last month, to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) noting he “lost his life to custodial violence”.

  • The Court also ordered an investigation to not only find out as to who all committed the offence of brutally beating the deceased to death, but also ascertaining the role of jail doctors in not providing proper treatment at the right time” 

  • Justice Gupta remarked that” Walls of prison, howsoever high they may be, the foundation of a prison is laid on the rule of law ensuring the rights to its inmates enshrined in the Constitution of India,” 

People have fundamental right to drinking water: HC
  • The Bombay High Court severely criticized a drinking water service provider for failing to provide for the residents of a village in Thane district.

  • The court said, “Water has to be supplied daily for at least a few hours. This is their fundamental right. People cannot suffer like this.” and directed Mr. Dangde to file an affidavit.

NDA will admit women: Govt.
  • The Union government gave the Supreme Court the “good news” that it had taken a decision to allow women entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA), so far a male bastion for recruitment into the armed forces.

  • On February 17 last year, the court upheld the permanent commission for women officers. It dismissed the government’s submissions that women were physiologically weaker than men as a “sex stereotype”. It declared that Short Service Commission (SSC) women officers were eligible for permanent commission and command posts in the Army irrespective of their years of service.

Don’t want press freedom muzzled: SC
  • The Supreme Court said it did not want press freedom to be muzzled even as it granted interim protection to journalists of a news website from any coercive action by the State of Uttar Pradesh.

Centre can extend ED Director’s term, says SC
  • The Supreme Court did not intervene with the government’s decision to “retrospectively extend” the tenure of Sanjay Kumar Mishra as the Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), saying his tenure is anyway drawing to a close in November 2021.

  • The court said the power to grant extensions for a “reasonable period” to the ED Director should be done rarely and only after recording the reasons.

SC Collegiums approves 12 names as permanent judges
  • The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) N.V. Ramana, has approved the names of 10 additional judges of the Karnataka High Court and two from the Kerala High Court for appointment as permanent judges of these courts.

Panel set up to draft Bill on drugs, cosmetics and medical devices
  • The Union government has constituted a committee for framing legislation regarding new drugs, cosmetics and medical devices. 

  • The eight member panel, headed by Drugs Controller General of India V.G. Somani is scheduled to submit a draft document by November 30.

  • The order further states that the committee shall undertake Pre-legislative consultations and examine the present Act, previously framed Drugs and Cosmetics Bills and submit a draft document for a new Drugs, Cosmetics and Medical Devices Bill.

Late-running trains to cost Railways dear
  • The Supreme Court has held that the Railways will have to pay passengers compensation for the late running of trains if unable to establish or prove that the delay was due to reasons beyond its control.

India, Russia review Afghanistan situation
  • India and Russia conducted their first “detailed and extensive review” of the situation in Afghanistan, agreeing to coordinate their positions at the United Nations, as a delegation led by Russia’s Security Council Secretary General Nikolai Patrushev met National Security Adviser Ajit Doval in Delhi.

India, Australia to hold 2+2 meet
  • India and Australia will hold the inaugural 2+2 Ministerial meeting here during the upcoming visit of Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Minister of Defence Peter Dutton.

  • The meeting will be part of Australia’s engagement with regional partners as the Ministers will also visit Indonesia, South Korea and the U.S. for Indo-Pacific consultations.
