SC takes Suo Motu cognisance of death sentences to convicts across India (APR 23, 2022)
The Supreme Court today took Suo Motu Cognizance of the issue of death sentences being given to convicts by courts across India. A bench of the Apex Court, headed by Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, took Suo Motu Cognizance of death sentences being given to convicts across India and also hinted that it will pass guidelines to make clarity on the very issue. The Apex court said this as many times a death row convict has to wait for mercy, when it has been filed or what are the chronological standard operating procedures for a death row convict to be executed, and many more legal processes.
During the course of the hearing today, the Attorney General referred to a book from the USA which gives details on how the police, courts, and advocates ought to deal with the issue of the death penalty, stating that it is institutionalised in the USA. The Apex Court was hearing a petition filed by one death row convict, Irfan (Bhayu Mevati) challenging the death penalty imposed on him by the trial court and confirmed by the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
ENFORCEMENT DIRECTORATE (ED)
ED lodges PMLA case against Jahangirpuri violence prime accused (APR 23, 2022)
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday initiated a money laundering probe against Jahangirpuri violence prime accused Mohammed Ansar Sheikh. On Friday, Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana had written to ED director to probe Ansar under Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The Delhi Police claimed that Ansar has acquired huge wealth through ill-gotten means and that all the real estates he owns is nothing but the proceeds of crime.
The probe agency has lodged an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), which is like an FIR against Ansar. Sources said that the case has been filed on the request of the Delhi police. A team of elite officials of the ED is likely to approach the Rohini court seeking his custodial remand.
On April 16, clashes broke out between two groups of people, belonging to different communities, during a Shobha Yatra procession on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area. As many as eight police personnel and a civilian sustained injuries in the violence.
MADRAS HIGH COURT
Indian Registration Act Most Misused Law, Retrospective Effect Of Registered Sale Deed Requires Cumulative Analysis Of All Evidence: Madras HC (APR 23, 2022)
The Madras High Court has recently held that while dealing with the aspect of "retrospective effect" under the Indian Registration Act, the courts shall not go by retrospective operations in simpliciter, as stated in the said Section, but consider all the attentive circumstances. These may relate to the purchase of stamp paper and the evidence of description, if any, presence of the executant and whether the executant, namely, the seller is a party defendant in the suit.
Only on a cumulative analysis of all attentive circumstances, a decision is to be rendered not by general presumption as stated by the provision alone, the bench of Justice Teekaa Raman observed.
The Court was dealing with a second appeal filed by one Arjunan seeking a declaration of title and a permanent injunction against the respondent Arunachalam, father of the original owner.

India only country among top 10 steel producing nations of the world to register growth in steel production in January to March 2022 (APR 23, 2022)
As per the data released by World Steel Association on April 22, India is the only country among top 10 steel producing nations of the world, which has registered growth in steel production in January to March 2022 period, as compared to corresponding period last year.
India has produced 31.9 million tonnes of steel in the period with a growth of 5.9 percent. In March 2022, with a production of 10.9 million tonnes of steel in India, the growth rate is 4.4 percent. Brazil is the only other country among top 10 Nations which has registered growth in the month of March.
