India elected as Chair of the Association of Asian Election Authorities (AAEA) for 2022-24 (MAY 11, 2022)
India has been unanimously elected as the new Chair of the Association of Asian Election Authorities (AAEA) for 2022-2024 at the recently held meeting of the Executive board and General Assembly at Manila, Philippines on May 7, 2022. Commission on Elections, Manila was the current chair of AAEA. The new member in the Executive Board now includes Russia, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Taiwan and Philippines.
Establishment and Membership of AAEA
In pursuance of the resolution passed by participants of the Symposium on Asian Elections in the Twenty First Century held from January 26-29, 1997 in Manila, Philippines, the Association of Asian Election Authorities (AAEA) was established in 1998. Currently 20 Asian EMBs are members of AAEA. ECI is a founder member EMB of the AAEA and also served on the Executive Board of the AAEA as the Vice Chair during 2011-13 and Chair during 2014-16.

India’s Supreme Court suspends all cases involving controversial colonial-era charge of ‘sedition’ (MAY 11, 2022)
In a historic development, the Supreme Court of India on Wednesday directed the state and the central government to pause the usage of controversial colonial-era sedition law till the Indian government re-examines it.
The court also directed the “release” of all persons “convicted and incarcerated” under the law, and ordered the magistrates against taking cognisance of criminal cases brought before it under this section. It has also directed all courts to “stay the delivery of any judgment” and “cease hearing of” any pending trial relating to the law.
The court passed the interim order while hearing a clutch of petitions seeking to challenge the constitutional validity of the sedition law under section 124 A of the Indian Penal Code.
ENFORCEMENT DIRECTORATE
ED arrests IAS Pooja Singhal, Rs 20 crore were recovered from her residence (MAY 11, 2022)
The Enforcement Directorate today arrested Jharkhand IAS Pooja Sighal. The ED had on last Friday conducted raids at multiple premises linked to IAS Pooja Singhal, who serves as Jharkhand Mining Secretary, in connection with a money-laundering probe linked to the alleged embezzlement of over Rs 18 crore MGNREGA funds in Khunti district of the state during 2008-11, officials said. The arrest took place soon after Pooja Singhal appeared before ED for questioning in the case.
The ED seized a total of Rs 19.31 crore cash from two premises that were searched in the state capital Ranchi. About Rs 17.51 crore cash has been recovered from the premises of a Ranchi-based Chartered Accountant-cum-financial advisor whose links with the IAS officer and her family are under the scanner, they said. Around Rs 1.8 crore cash has also been recovered from another location in the city, they said.

PAN, Aadhaar must for cash deposits or withdrawals above Rs 20 lakh from May 26 (MAY 11, 2022)
Furnishing a permanent account number (PAN) or Aadhaar will be mandatory from May 26, 2022, if the cash deposit exceeds Rs 20 lakh or more in a financial year, a notification from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said.
Besides, PAN and Aadhaar will be a must for cash withdrawal or withdrawals aggregating to Rs 20 lakh or more in a financial year, in one or more accounts of a person with a banking company or a co-operative bank or a post office.
Also, PAN and Aadhaar will be mandatory for opening a current account or cash credit account by a person with a banking company or a co-operative bank, or a post office.

Sri Lanka Economic Crisis Live: Sri Lanka's central bank governor to quit in 2 weeks if crisis continues (MAY 11, 2022)
Sri Lanka’s central bank governor said that he would resign if political parties do not ensure stability in the next two weeks, according to a PTI report. P Nandalal Weerasinghe told the media that without a political solution to the present crisis, the bank’s steps towards revival of the nation’s economy would not be successful.
