The Bombay High Court on Monday dismissed a public interest litigation seeking to prohibit newspapers from publishing images of gods and goddesses as they are later found in dustbins and on roads.
A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice V G Bisht said it cannot pass such orders and that it is not the function of the HC to legislate or even direct the State to issue a legislation.

Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren gets Election Commission notice over mining lease (MAY 2, 2022)
The Election Commission has issued a notice to Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren asking him to explain why disqualification proceedings should not be initiated against him over grant of a mining lease in his favour last year. He became the CM for the second time in 2019. The case has implications for continuation of Soren as an MLA and the head of the Jharkhand government.
Sources said the notice sent by the poll panel which follows a reference sent by the governor to it under Article 192 of the Constitution of India points to the authenticated documents received from the state chief secretary last week, confirming issue of the mining lease of 0.88 acre in Angara block of Ranchi, to Soren, who also happens to hold the mining portfolio.
Prima facie viewing the documents as a ground for disqualification under Section 9A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the EC on Monday asked Soren to reply to the notice latest by May 10, clarifying his stand on the issue.
