The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, an international court with its seat in Hamburg, Germany, has the following vacancy.

Associate Legal Officer (P-2)

Functions: Under the supervision of the Head of Legal Office, and the general direction of the Registrar, the main tasks of the incumbent include:
  • Providing advice and assistance on judicial and administrative questions relating to the work of the Tribunal, including publications, workshops and training programmes;
  • Undertaking studies and research in the field of public and private international law, law of the sea and administrative law; examining statutes, rules, agreements or other legal instruments and precedents relating to the activities of the Tribunal;
  • Providing services to the Tribunal, its Chambers and Committees and preparing background materials, reports and papers;
  • Preparing draft agreements, contracts, internal rules and regulations, opinions, reports and correspondence on issues relating to the activities of the Tribunal.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Advanced university degree in law with specialization in international law, settlement of international disputes, law of the sea or law of international organizations; a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in law; relevant international work experience is desirable. Excellent knowledge of English or French with working knowledge of the other and computer literacy are required.
  • The Tribunal reserves the right to appoint a candidate at one level below the advertised post.

An initial two-year fixed-term renewable contract, attractive tax-free salary with United Nations benefits and allowances.
