Govt appoints Indian Revenue Services officer Nitin Gupta new CBDT chairman (JUNE 27, 2022)
IRS officer Nitin Gupta has been appointed as the new CBDT chairman, a recent government order said. Gupta, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the 1986 batch of the Income Tax cadre, is serving as the Member (investigation) in the Board and is scheduled to retire in September next year.
The post of the CBDT chief was being held in an additional capacity by Board member and 1986-batch IRS officer Sangeeta Singh after J B Mohapatra retired on April 30.
The CBDT is headed by a Chairman and can have six members who are in the rank of special secretary.

Finance Ministry asks banks to tie up with fintech; explore co-lending opportunities (JUNE 27, 2022)
The Finance Ministry has asked public sector banks to explore fintech partnerships and co-lending opportunities to expand their business. The ministry also urged the heads of the public sector lenders to strengthen IT security systems and cybersecurity to check fraud.
As per the RBI's latest data, growth in lending by PSBs has improved significantly to 7.8 per cent in March 2022 from 3.6 per cent a year ago. Some of the PSBs recorded 26 per cent growth.
To improve the financial health of PSBs, the government implemented a comprehensive 4Rs strategy -- recognition of NPAs transparently, resolution and recovery of value from stressed accounts, recapitalisation of PSBs, and reforms in PSBs and the wider financial ecosystem -- for a responsible and clean system.
BOMBAY HIGH COURT
Bombay High Court: No defamation in case of fair reporting of FIR (JUNE 27, 2022)
The Bombay High Court while quashing criminal proceedings of defamation that had been initiated over a news report has stated that a true report of affairs available in the public domain is a right that follows from the fundamental right granting freedom of speech.
The ruling stated that taking action on the grounds of defamation against a true report is an unhealthy practice in a democratic setup. It also stated that it is not the responsibility of the publisher to ascertain the authenticity of the facts mentioned in a First Information Report (FIR).

NHRC directs Govt to take steps on abuse of minors in short stay homes (JUNE 27, 2022)
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) directed the State’s Chief Secretary to initiate measures on the recommendation of the Special Rapporteur, on the issue of death and exploitation of children in Shelter homes in the State in general and in the Dhenkanal district in particular.
Disposing a petition filed by rights activist and lawyer Radhakanta Tripathy the NHRC passed the order seeking compliance of suggestive measures by the Special Rapporteur.
