National Mission for Justice Delivery and Legal Reforms was set up in August, 2011 with the twin objectives of increasing access by reducing delays and arrears in the system and enhancing accountability through structural changes and by setting performance standards and capacities.  

The Mission has been pursuing a co-ordinated approach for phased liquidation of arrears and pendency in judicial administration, which, inter-alia, involves better infrastructure for courts including computerization, increase in strength of subordinate judiciary, policy and legislative measures in the areas prone to excessive litigation, re-engineering of court procedure for quick disposal of cases and emphasis on human resource development.

SUPREME COURT 

Supreme Court allows unmarried woman to terminate pregnancy at 24 weeks, overrules Delhi HC order (JUL 21, 2022)

The Supreme Court on Thursday passed an ad-interim order to allow an unmarried woman to abort her pregnancy of 24-weeks arising out of a consensual relationship, subject to a medical board constituted by the All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi concluding that the foetus can be aborted without risk to the life of the woman.

A bench headed by Justices D Y Chandrachud observed that the Delhi High Court took an unduly restrictive view of the provisions of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Rules while declining the woman's interim relief.

DELHI HIGH COURT 

No clean milk for Delhi residents? High Court refuses to entertain PIL seeking sanitary dairy (JUL 21, 2022)

The Delhi High Court on Thursday refused to entertain a PIL to "advise" the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi and the Commissioner of city police to ensure a supply of clean and hygienic milk to citizens here. A bench headed by Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma said that no law empowered the court to "advise" the LG.

In the petition, the petitioner said that the "neglected, abandoned and pathetic condition of the cattle is affecting the health of Delhiites."  The petitioner added that the issue in her plea concerned the right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution while claiming that the court has the power to advise the LG under its "advisory jurisdiction".
