New law relating to information technology and data protection (jul 22, 2022)
Government’s goals are aimed at ensuring Open, Safe & Trusted and Accountable internet for its users. In this regard, this Ministry continues to have discussion with the concerned stakeholders including industry, legal experts & academicians to achieve our objectives including new legislations, amendments of the Rules, etc.
The existing Information Technology Act was enacted twenty two years ago in 2000. Since then, the technology and the internet today has evolved at a very fast pace. There is a paradigm change in the opportunity in the Cyberspace and the challenges associated with it, which was not envisaged in 2000.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.
SUPREME COURT
Ambani's should continue to get security from Centre, says Supreme Court (JUL 22, 2022)
The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Centre to continue providing security cover to Reliance Industries chairperson Mukesh Ambani and his family, Live Law reported.
A bench of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Justice Krishna Murari and Hima Kohli passed the order in response to a petition filed by the Centre challenging an order of the Tripura High Court.
On June 21, the Tripura High Court had directed the Centre to place before it the original file with the home ministry about the threat perception to the Reliance Industries chairperson and his family. It had passed the order in response to a public interest litigation filed by a person named Bikash Saha.
Mukesh Ambani and his family members are provided with Z+ security cover, under which 58 personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force guard them round the clock. His security level was upgraded from the Z category in 2013 after the Union home ministry carried out a review of the threat perception.
No publicity PILs, please: Supreme Court junks plea to raise smoking age (JUL 22, 2022)
The Supreme Court on Friday junked a plea seeking a direction to increase the smoking age from 18 to 21, and ban the sale of loose cigarettes. A bench comprising Justices S K Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia rejected the plea filed by two advocates.
The apex court was hearing public interest litigation filed by advocates Shubham Awasthi and Sapta Rishi Mishra seeking guidelines to control smoking.
The plea also sought directions to remove smoking zones from commercial places besides banning the sale of loose cigarettes near educational and healthcare institutions and also places of worship.

Samsung plans to invest $200bn in semiconductor production (JUL 22, 2022)
Samsung is planning to invest nearly $200 billion to build 11 more chip plants in the US, over the next two decades, documents filed with the state of Texas showed on Friday.
Samsung is the world’s largest chip(semiconductor) maker in the world, and the company already has a giant chip plant in Austin, while it is building a $17 billion plant in nearby Taylor.

Private wards at AIIMS-Delhi to cost more due to GST on room rent above Rs 5,000 (JUL 22, 2022)
AIIMS-Delhi on Thursday announced a raise in the charges of its private ward rooms. The move comes following a recent decision by the GST Council to levy a 5% tax on hospital room rent exceeding Rs 5,000 per day. The revised charge will be effective from July 18, as per government notification.
The notification issued by AIIMS states that the charges for A class (deluxe room) at AIIMS will now be Rs 6,300 per day. Patients have to pay 10 days advance deposit of Rs 66,000, including 5% GST and diet charges.
