ELECTION COMMISSION 

Election Commission declares 253 RUPPs as inactive - bars them from availing benefits of the Symbol Order, 1968 (DEP 13, 2022)

As per statutory requirements under section 29A of the RP Act, every political party has to communicate any change in its name, head office, office bearers, address, PAN to the Commission without delay. 86 RUPPs have been found to be non-existent either after a physical verification carried out by the respective Chief Electoral Officers of concerned States/UTs or based on report of undelivered letters/notices from Postal Authority sent to the registered address of concerned RUPP. 

It may be recalled that ECI had delisted 87 RUPPs and 111 RUPPs vide orders dated May 25, 2022, and June 20, 2022, thus totalling the number of delisted RUPPs to 284.

SUPREME COURT 

Right To Contest an Election Not a Fundamental Right: Supreme Court (SEP 13, 2022)

The right to contest an election is neither a fundamental right nor a common law right, the Supreme Court has said while dismissing with a cost of ₹ one lakh a petition which raised the issue regarding the filing of nomination for Rajya Sabha elections. 

Observing that an individual cannot claim that he has a right to contest an election, the top court noted that the Representation of People Act, 1950, read with the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961, has contemplated the name of a candidate has to be proposed while filling the nomination form.

Competition Commission of India (Procedure for Engagement of Experts and Professionals) Amendment Regulations, 2022 (SEP 13, 2022)

In the Competition Commission of India (Procedure for Engagement of Experts and Professionals) Regulations, 2009 in schedule III2 of regulation 6, the following shall be substituted, namely: -

Grade of Expert & Young Professional

Lump-sum monthly remuneration

Age Limit as on the date of advertisement

Young Professional -I

₹ 60,000 with 10% increase on completion of each year

Up to 30 Years

Young Professional -II

₹ 80,000 with 10% increase on completion of each year

Up to 35 Years

Expert - I

₹ 1,05,000 with 10%increase on completion of each year

Expert - II

₹ 1,30,000 with 10% increase on completion of each year

Expert - III

₹ 1,55,000 with 10% increase on completion of each year

Amazon Moves High Court Over ₹ 1 Lakh Penalty In Pressure Cookers Case (SEP 13, 2022)

In August, CCPA imposed ₹ one lakh penalty on Amazon for selling pressure cookers that did not meet quality standards and also directed the company to notify the consumers of all these 2,265 pressure cookers sold through its platform, recall the products, and reimburse the prices to buyers.

The plea came up before Justice Yashwant Varma who was told by CCPA counsel that she needs time to take instructions from the department on the matter.
